Listening to COA’s Field Stations: Three Immersive Sound Installations

Producer, Project Lead

Students in my Sound Studies Practicum class (co-taught with podcaster Galen Koch) designed six-channel sound installations exploring three COA field stations: Mount Desert Rock, Great Duck Island, and North Woods Ways. Using field recordings and archival material, the project aimed to convey a sense of place through an immersive listening experience. After teaching the students field recording techniques, we traveled to each field station to record sounds. They then sorted through the recordings and built an archive of selects to work with. The next phase of the project included conducting archival research and a series of workshops I offered on sound spatialization. The students were ambitious and created an excellent multi-channel sound installation that reflected the history of the field stations and their current use by the College of the Atlantic community.
